Each year many students from neighboring Appalachian State University volunteer at MerleFest. Their enthusiasm and energy are assets to the MerleFest volunteer program. One of those students is Molly Watson, an Environmental Biology student from Williamsburg, Virginia. Since Williamsburg is six hours from Wilkesboro, Molly didn't have the opportunity to come to the festival during her high school days, but now that she lives in Boone it is a short drive down the mountain to reach MerleFest.
Molly was looking for a way to become more involved with the festival so she checked out the website and sent in her volunteer application. "I've worked in the raffle booth, and I really enjoyed that because I got to meet a lot of people who have been coming to MerleFest since it began," commented Molly. "You could tell who the veterans were because they were the ones who brought address stickers so they wouldn't have to fill out 100 raffle tickets! Being a college student, I don't really get to meet a lot of people who actually live in this area because I'm always on campus, so it is really interesting to hear their stories."
At MerleFest 2008, Molly's favorite entertainer was Levon Helm. She said, "I have loved The Band since I can remember, so seeing him was one of my goals in life. I still am blown away by how great a show he put on." She also enjoys Sam Bush, her all-time favorite MerleFest entertainer. "He never fails to deliver a great show. I enjoy seeing the crowd light up and everyone start to dance when he starts playing." Her other festival favorites are Doc Watson and Donna the Buffalo.
So, ASU students, we hope you will join Molly in volunteering at MerleFest. Come and enjoy the camaraderie and fun of being on the inside of the festival. Wear your black and gold so everyone can share in your pride of being Mountaineers! Go Apps!
