February 2011 - Group Spotlight - Wilkesboro Fire Department
If you happen to be one of the first people to enter the MerleFest grounds at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday of the festival, before it is filled with excited festival-goers, you are confronted by a sea of green chairs where the week before it was just a pretty grass field. On Sunday before the festival, volunteers from the Wilkesboro Fire Department take the chairs out of storage, clean them and line them up in straight rows on the lines that have been laid. The chairs are placed in precise order so that reserved ticket holders are assured the stage view they expect.
Deputy Chief Keith Reid of Wilkesboro Fire Department says the group is pleased to support the festival because it has such a positive impact on the community. But, their MerleFest work affects the community even further. The monies they receive from MerleFest go toward their Retired Firemen’s Pension Fund and for the group’s various projects. These projects include their Christmas Cheer project at the Old Wilkes County Courthouse and at nursing homes.
As is true of all our volunteer groups, MerleFest would not happen without the assistance of the Wilkesboro Fire Department.
