Ritchie, Dennis, and I made it to the campus of what is now UVA at Wise circa 1980. It was the only time I got to see Merle and Doc together. Just simply a great and wonderful concert. After drinking btw 1-48 beers I took a restroom break. Not hearing (Ritchie later told me later, he may have exaggerated) Doc said let see where your loyalty lies in these next two songs. When I returned from the back of the packed auditorium they were playing “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and it being relatively quite I let out a big yell for the great music that was making my ears happy; as I walked back to my seat. Just before I took my seat near the front at stage left they tore into “Dixie.” Well the Virginia mountain crowd stood and went absolutely wild and I felt the eyes and focus on me for a moment; I suppose it was retaliation of some sort. Well this ‘ol boy from the South (after 2 or 3 moments went by, shook off whatever was on me) joined in and enjoyed the song as well. The rest of the show was even better as it kept building to a night I’ll never forget….even if I get Alzheimers! Maybe I should have been a cheerleader, from time to time I sort know how to rile up a crowd :) Well, let’s let bygones be bygones, God bless the North and the South (brothers and sisters we are in this together).
